Japan wants to build a solar ring around the moon that will provide endless clean energy to Earth
More than a decade ago, a Japanese construction company unveiled a plan to build a massive belt of solar panels around the Moon’s equator. The concept, called the Luna Ring, would stretch for 6,800 miles and generate uninterrupted solar power without any of the weather or darkness problems that plague Earth based arrays.
A new analysis of meteorite isotopes challenges long-held ideas about Earth’s origins, suggesting our planet may have formed almost entirely from nearby material rather than distant sources. Planetary scientists have long debated the origin of the material that formed Earth.

Study: Earth formed mostly from inner solar system material
Planetary scientists led by Paolo Sossi have determined that Earth assembled almost entirely from material originating in the inner solar system, with outer solar system contributions limited to just a few percent of the planet’s total mass.
For years, planetary scientists have argued that some of the material that built Earth must have drifted in from beyond Jupiter, carrying water and other volatile ingredients with it. Estimates often
The world has tracked the journey of NASA’s Artemis II mission for five days. The four astronauts have launched into space, tested life support and other important systems of their Orion spacecraft, tangled with the vehicle’s toilet,
Last month, Earth was treated to a massive aurora borealis that reached as far south as Texas. The event was attributed to a solar storm that lasted nearly a full day and will likely contend for the strongest of 2026. Such solar storms are usually fun for ...
Every day on Earth, you experience weather. You feel the wind blowing and see clouds move across the sky. Sometimes there are storms where the wind gets really strong, it might rain, or there might be thunder and lightning. Did you know that there’s ...
A new NASA spacecraft has started tracking the particle streams that can make a massive solar flare dangerous while mapping the Sun’s shield. That pairing connects short-term storm warnings near Earth with the far boundary that helps block harsher radiation from deep space.
There's two eclipses in September, and one of them is tonight. A partial solar eclipse is set to occur on Sept. 21, which is when the moon casts a shadow on the Earth and partially blocks the view of the sun, according to NASA. Solar eclipses can only ...
EU researchers are developing powerful new telescopes to help uncover Earth-like planets around distant stars and advance the search for extraterrestrial life. Solar storms captured the imagination of much of the American public earlier this year when ...

Artemis II breaks Apollo 13’s distance record with daring moon flyby that included a solar eclipse
The seven-hour flyby was the highlight of NASA’s first return to the moon since the Apollo era with three Americans and one Canadian — a step toward landing boot prints near t
